Think about what you like to eat and see if you can find ways to consume a healthier version of it. This works because you need to enjoy your diet to sustain it, and if you are making changes to have a healthy weight, you’ll want to stick with those.
One of the most important things is to find healthy alternatives that do not leave you feeling deprived. That means continuing to eat dessert if you like that, as well as other things you enjoy. The key is to find foods that satisfy and also are healthy. You will want to balance foods in all food groups and consume each group in the right proportion. One of the best self-care tips I can offer is to take care of your skin. The skin is our largest organ and is highly dependent on what we eat and how we treat ourselves. Some of my best self-care advice for younger, healthier, and more radiant skin are:
- Make your beauty sleep a priority. Without enough sleep, your skin will produce less collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Causing your skin to age faster. The lymphatic drainage will also decline, leading to under-eye bags and/or darkness under your eyes. Without enough sleep, you will also get more inflammation, leading to acne and other skin problems. Most people need somewhere between 7-9 hours of sleep to feel and look fully rested per night. You need to find out what amount is right for you.
- Eat more colorful fruits and vegetables. These are packed with a certain kind of antioxidants (called carotenoids) that are proven to boost your production of collagen and hyaluronic acid. As well as protect your skin from damaging sun rays and other stress factors. Some great examples are mangoes, broccoli, melons (all kinds), kale, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, goji berries, and corn. Most people eat far too little fruits and vegetables in general, so make sure you’re not one of them and increase your intake!
- Stay far away from cigarette smoke. This is not just a well-known carcinogenic. It is also one of the worst things for your skin. Even passive smoking is aging your skin a lot faster than it should need to. My best advice is to simply avoid it as much as you possibly can. And if you’re a smoker yourself, definitely stop as soon as you possibly can if you care for your skin.

Dedicating some time to yourself first thing in the morning is an essential part of self-care. I find that if I choose to do it after work – I often skip it. Starting the day with YOU makes all the difference in how you feel. Having a good morning routine is one of the best self-care tips anyone can offer.
My morning routine includes yoga and meditation, taking care of both my mind and body. I think that combining some physical activity with a stress-relief technique works wonders. Jogs and journalling, pilates, and breathwork – do whatever works for you.
In terms of self-care, it’s also important to recognize and accept that all mornings will not be the same in terms of self-care. For example, you might be feeling tired or anxious on some days – tweak your routine accordingly. For example, when I am not feeling my best, I gravitate towards gentle types of yoga, such as yin, or I might altogether skip movement and spend more time meditating.

I never really thought about self-care until I was diagnosed with cancer. I was too busy raising my children, caring for my family, and advancing my career. One of the best ways you can practice self-care is by making time for yourself. Whether it’s as simple as spending 10 minutes a day alone with your thoughts, meditating, praying, journaling, or setting intentions, or honoring the commitments, you’ve made to yourself. You are keeping your 30-minute workout no matter how busy your day gets, making time for the things that matter, and not allowing your name to be pushed to the bottom of your list.

Don’t Neglect Self-Care
Most of us neglect our self-care because it feels like one more thing we need to add to our to-do list each week. However, the actual benefits of self-care sneak in when we seamlessly work it into our current schedules. This might mean taking an extra 5 minutes in the morning to do some deep breathing, choosing the healthier option when it comes to picking up or making dinner, or simply learning to say no to invites when our schedules are already full. Find What Works For You
1. Always stay mindful of your body and know your limits. For example, I love pasta but have no self-control around it, so, therefore, I know not to include pasta in my weekly meal plan other than for cheat days or a special treat! Rice, on the other hand, I also like but can easily stick to the recommended half-cup portion.
2. Make sure you are holding yourself accountable. Keep a wellness journal or diary to track your progress towards goals, and make sure you remember that the only person you are cheating on when you cheat on your health/fitness journey is yourself.
3. Find healthy foods that you enjoy, and don’t be afraid to repeat them in your weekly meal plans and diet. In about four months, I lost over 30 pounds by simply eating foods that helped me feel full even when they didn’t pack a huge calorie punch. Some examples include watermelon, soups, zoodles or spaghetti squash, cauliflower rice, and smoothies.
