Being a good father isn’t as simple as putting food on the table, paying the bills, and handling the repairs. It’s a process that requires a healthy balance of parenting, self-care, and personal growth. Being a working dad is hard, which is why I developed these healthy habits for hard-working dads to use.

Speaking of healthy habits, everyone knows that Father’s Day is the one day a year when Dad gets to put himself first. So, after receiving the obligatory tie, cologne, and best dad mugs, Dad has a little more say in the Father’s Day plans.

This Father’s Day serves as a reminder to every dad or father figure that they deserve to practice self-care and prioritize their overall physical health. Self-care is an essential part of a man’s toolbox and is necessary for being a good partner, boss, and even father.

Today, I’ve compiled a list of healthy habits for hard-working dads – from hitting the gym to getting more sleep, there’s something in here for every dad to use. Here are 16 healthy habits for men, dads, and everyone.

Healthy Habits For Hard-Working Dads

  1. Schedule Your Colonoscopy: According to Unity Point Health, “Colorectal cancer is both the third most common cancer in men and the third leading cause of cancer death in men.” This cancer is preventable with regular and ongoing colonoscopies, recommended for men 45 years old and older. This is one of the essential healthy habits for men to adopt as they age.
  2. Hit the Gym: If you haven’t had time to hit the gym, now is an excellent time to schedule a visit. Use Father’s Day as an excuse to have some me-time with your favorite weights or treadmill.
  3. Check-In On Your Health: More than women, men tend to neglect their health to work and provide for their families. Check in with yourself, and if you notice anything suspicious or something doesn’t seem right, then maybe it’s time to talk to your Primary Care Physician.
  4. Get 8 to 12 Hours of Sleep: Regardless of age, sleep is essential for maintaining proper metabolism and having energy for the next day. Sleep in this Father’s Day and catch up on the hours you’re missing. Trust me. Your body won’t regret it.
  5. Stay Hydrated: Drinking water helps keep you hydrated and supports the body’s natural detoxification process throughout the day and night. Drinking water offers numerous health benefits, including improved heart health, weight management, and clearer skin.
  6. Add More Fruits and Vegetables to Your Diet: Fruits and vegetables are essential for being a healthy and happy individual. Make sure you take advantage of all the various nutrients found in natural produce. Next time you want to snack on some BBQ chips, grab a banana instead.
  7. Start Stretching More: Many people don’t realize how valuable stretching for just a few minutes can be for their bodies. It ensures your muscles are taken care of after working out, keeps you loose and ready to move about all day, and it’s good for your back.
  8. Listen To Your Body: Many men live their lives on a ‘go-go-go’ mindset, which, in the long run, negatively affects their physical health. If you feel worn down or think your body needs a rest, then give it a break.
  1. Wash Hands Regularly: As a dad, you’re surrounded by little monster germs all day. Washing your hands for an additional 20 seconds can help prevent sickness and illnesses.
  2. Groom Yourself: This goes without saying, but as a man, you must take time to groom your beard, sideburns, or private parts. Always ensure the necessities, such as a good moisturizer and face cream, hand lotion, razors, and balms, are nearby to keep the skin healthy.
  3. Cook at Home: Cooking at home is a healthy and budget-friendly option.
  4. Meal Prep: Meal prepping helps you to practice portioning and calorie counting. If one of your health goals is to lose weight or go on a diet, then meal preparation is one of those healthy habits dads need to achieve.
  5. Learn How To Manage Stress: As crazy as this sounds, stress is not only a mental health issue. It also affects your physical health. When you’re constantly stressed, both mental and physical health decline. Take some time to find strategies that work best for dealing with stress. Remember, mental health also matters for men.
  6. Take Your Vitamins: One of the best healthy habits for men is to take their daily vitamins. As silly as this sounds, it’s true. As men age, their nutritional and immune support needs change, so vitamins are essential. Vitamins help supplement the nutrients you may be missing, such as Vitamins A, B, C, D, and E.
  7. Schedule Proper ‘Me Time’ Away From the Family: I know you love your family, but they can drive you crazy sometimes, don’t they? Make sure to schedule some time away from the family, even if it’s just for 15 minutes a day.
  8. Practice Meditation: Meditating is a great way for Dad to relax and calm his nerves. If he tends to get stressed, angry, or easily agitated, he should start this health practice. Meditation helps teach the body to recognize and deal with stress, nervousness, and anxiety. It’s also a great way to practice spiritual self-care and relieve tension.

Other Ways For Men To Care For Their Health This Father’s Day and Beyond

Father’s Day is not the only time for men to take care of themselves. Self-care is a year-round, 24/7 task that requires consistent attention and time. Additionally, while physical health is crucial to your overall well-being, other aspects of life require equal attention, including mental health, spirituality, social life, and even financial stability.

Other healthy habits that men can adopt include taking themselves on a solo date, getting a pedicure, playing with the children, going fishing, or doing anything that brings joy and happiness into their lives.

If you haven’t tried these healthy habits before, you really should. They can only make your life a little bit better. Do you practice any other healthy habits that might benefit all dads? Let me know in the comments.
