8 Self-Care Ideas for a Summer Reset
Summer is my favorite season. It’s the perfect time for finding new ways to reflect, regulate, and relax. Most people use the summer season to slow down and reconnect with themselves. Personally, I like to think of summer as the best season for doing an inner reset. An inner reset is a grounding practice in which you step away from the chaos and transition into mental clarity and peace.
A summer reset is not about becoming a completely different person overnight. It is about creating small changes that help you feel happier, healthier, and more balanced. When life gets busy, or you’re overwhelmed by work or school, it’s easy to forget you need time for yourself, too. Well, this summer I am dedicating myself to resetting my mind and body with some simple self-care exercises.
If life has been feeling overwhelming lately, this is your reminder that you can always start again. Here’s your ultimate summer reset checklist for your mind and body.
Declutter Your Space
The summer season is the best time to make room for new things. Many studies have shown mental health benefits to decluttering your space, including lowering cortisol levels, improving focus, and enhancing overall physical health. The idea is that how you keep your space affects how your mind processes multiple types of information at once.
Your environment can affect your mood more than you think. Clutter often creates unnecessary stress and mental overwhelm, especially when life already feels busy. With decluttering, you’re eliminating everything that either doesn’t align with your life goals or serves a purpose.
Start your summer reset by cleaning and organizing the spaces you spend the most time in.
This can include:
- Cleaning your bedroom
- Organizing your closet
- Throwing away things you no longer use
- Washing your sheets and bedding
- Deep cleaning your bathroom
- Refreshing your workspace
- Donating old clothes that no longer fit or that you don’t like
- Cleaning your makeup brushes
- Throwing old, old makeup palettes.
- Cleaning your refrigerator and tossing away old food
- Getting a new planner and organizing your upcoming weeks
You do not have to do everything in one day. Even small cleaning tasks can make your space feel calmer and more peaceful.
Move Your Body More
Between family beach trips, lounging at the pool, and playing at the local beach, getting a good workout is much easier to do in the summer than in any other season. Your summer reset does not need to involve intense workouts or unrealistic fitness goals. The goal of exercise is to move your body in a way that makes you and your body feel good. Some of my favorite summer exercise activities include taking long strolls at the park, swimming at the pool, lifting weights, and running with the baby.
Regular movement helps improve your mental health, confidence, energy levels, and overall well-being. While moving your body is important, knowing your physical limitations is equally important. Many people tend to put their bodies in harm’s way by not drinking enough water and not taking enough breaks from the sun. Even though summer is a good season for exercise, it can easily become dangerous. Always take precautions before starting any new activity.

Reset Your Sleep Schedule
Summer can easily throw off your sleep routine with vacations, late nights, and social events. However, getting enough rest is essential for both your mental and physical health. If you’re someone like me, who also works a full-time job, then it’s even more important to establish a consistent schedule.
Without sleep, you run the risk of dealing with sleep deprivation, declining mental and cognitive functions, and irritability. Also, people with a lack of sleep tend to be more depressed and more likely to lash out at people. A consistent sleep schedule can improve your energy, mood, focus, and stress levels.
Try to create a healthier nighttime routine by:
- Going to bed earlier
- Limiting screen time before bed
- Drinking less caffeine late at night
- Keeping your room cool and comfortable
- Avoiding scrolling on social media before sleeping
Drink More Water Than Usual
One of the easiest ways to reset your body this summer is by staying hydrated. Drinking more water can help improve your skin, digestion, energy levels, and concentration. Try carrying a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day or adding fruit to your water if plain water feels boring. Small habits like this can make a huge difference over time. Some things I’ve noticed that help me remember to drink water are setting an alarm about every hour and using flavored IV liquid packets, so it sometimes feels like I am drinking juice. There are many little ways to make drinking water feel less like a chore; find one that works for you.
Summer is the perfect time to slow down, recharge, and reconnect with yourself. Here are 8 simple self-care ideas to help reset your mind and body this season.
TweetPrioritize Your Mental Health
Your mental health deserves attention, too. Sometimes a reset is less about changing your appearance and more about checking in with yourself emotionally.
Make time for things that help you feel mentally supported, such as:
- Journaling
- Therapy
- Mindfulness
- Resting
- Spending time outdoors
- Talking to supportive people
- Practicing gratitude
Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body.

Take a Social Media Break
The summer is great, but it can sometimes leave a person feeling too relaxed or lazy, which can lead to doomscrolling or even spending too much time just distracted by watching others’ social media lives. Constant scrolling can leave you feeling mentally exhausted, distracted, and disconnected from your real life. Summer is a great time to step back from social media and spend more time being present. You do not have to disappear from the internet to benefit from a reset.
You can set screen time limits, unfollow accounts that no longer serve you, take one social media-free day each week, and spend less time comparing yourself to others online. Taking a social media break in the summer is probably easiest when you combine it with something like swimming at the pool or camping. Either way, this summer is a good time to step away from Instagram, TikTok, and all those other social media sites and live a little.
Creating distance from screens can help improve your focus, reduce stress, and make you feel more present in your everyday life. Sometimes the best reset comes from unplugging for a while and giving your mind a chance to breathe.
Spend More Time Doing Things You Enjoy
As adults, it’s easy to become consumed by responsibilities and forget to make time for fun. Part of resetting your life is reconnecting with what genuinely makes you happy. Last year, I missed out on all the opportunities to enjoy the summer because I waited until the weekends. It ended up raining every weekend. This summer, I promised myself I would take random days off work so my daughter and I could actually enjoy spending time outdoors.
You cannot spend every waking moment of your life working; that’s how you end up with burnout. Burnout happens when you don’t make room in your life for the physical and mental breaks you need. Summer is supposed to be a time for relaxation, so make more room for it.
Create Better Eating Habits
Summer is a great time to focus on nourishing your body instead of restricting yourself. Healthy eating is not about perfection. It is about creating balanced habits that help you feel your best. In the summer, there are many opportunities to eat healthier by shopping at the local fruit and vegetable stands, eating summer seasonal foods such as peaches, berries, and sweet corn, and even stepping out of your comfort zone to try a new recipe on the grill.
Focus on Becoming the Best Version of Yourself
A summer reset is not about becoming perfect. It is about becoming more intentional with your habits, mindset, and self-care. Start small. Choose a few things from this checklist and build from there. Your life does not need to look completely different overnight to improve.
Remember that consistency matters more than perfection. Most importantly, remember that you deserve to feel good mentally, emotionally, and physically, not just during summer, but all year long.
Use this summer season to start making little changes. Over time, you’ll notice that these changes will start to make a difference in your life.

This is exactly what I needed. Thank you for sharing.
Ugh, I love all of this! Self-care is so important, especially in the summer! The sunshine is so healing to me
Oh my gosh, I’m so bad at maintaining a sleep schedule but you’re right, it’s so helpful. Thanks so much for this.
This was a nice read. The part about decluttering really spoke to me. Been meaning to go through my closet for weeks. Thanks for the push.
