7 Fitness Tips For Working Out After A Break
Are you returning from a long break? Here are some fitness tips to help you with getting back into shape!

Are you considering returning to working out after taking a break due to injury, illness, or personal reasons? Don’t know how to start back?
At the beginning of 2022. I started working out after taking a break for more than 6 months. Unfortunately, I have had a few injuries that meant I could not work out. I’ve tried to get back into it but struggled the first few times. But I recently started getting back into a steady exercise routine.
Tips for Working Out After Taking a Break
Here are my most successful tips for getting back into working out after taking a break:
Find an Exercise Buddy
Finding an exercise buddy is simple. You can get a friend to join you on your journey. You can attend exercise classes, run together, or do the same exercise routine. Knowing someone is on the same journey as you will help, as you can compare everything and celebrate the small achievements.
Start Doing Something Easy
After taking any time off from exercising, you cannot do the same exercises as before. So, you have to start with something easier. For example, you used to lift 80 kg weights. You cannot do that now due to the lost strength within your body. Another example is that you used to be able to run 10km in 45 minutes. Your body won’t be able to do that now.
You will need to build up your body again. It may be a slow process, but you will regain that strength.
Make a Schedule
One of my favorite tips is making a schedule when returning to working out after taking a break. It’s a great way to motivate yourself. Sit down and look at your plan to see where you can fit a quick workout. Some examples of when to do an activity are:
- Get up an hour earlier than normal
- Fit in a workout during your lunch break
- Pop in a workout after work
Once you have figured out the best workout time, why not put it on a weekly paper or phone calendar? You will likely stick to your workouts when you have them written down.
Join a Fitness App
This is another one of my favorite tips. This has helped me get back into working out after taking a break. So many fitness apps could be the right fit for you. I am currently using the Bodycoach app, but there are other options, such as:
- Peloton (https://www.onepeloton.co.uk/)
- Centr by Chris Hemsworth (https://centr.com/)
- Shred (https://www.shred.app/)
- FitOn (https://app.fitonapp.com/)
- Jillian Michaels Fitness (https://www.jillianmichaels.com/)
Fitness apps are a great way to motivate yourself. Many of them have a meal plan and a range of workouts for you to do.

Remember to Take Rest Days
A vital tip to remember when you start working out after taking a break is to take a rest day, especially if you are recovering from injuries. Make sure you listen to your body.
Stay Hydrated
Another tip is to stay hydrated. Once you start working again, you may feel dehydrated. So drink a lot of water. This helps cleanse your body of toxins.
Setting goals
Setting goals could help motivate you to return to working out again. There are many realistic, achievable goals to choose from, such as:
- Lose some weight
- Tone up your body
- A fitness challenge like a marathon or CrossFit challenge
These are just a few ways to get back into working out after taking a break. However, before pursuing any of the tips above, make sure there are no excuses. Think about what you will get out of the journey. This will motivate you to start, and the rest will fall into place if you want it to.

These are all such great tips! I am currently in the process of starting my workout routine back up again after taking a break for a couple of weeks.
I’m in the same boat. I’m slowly working on returning back to fitness, especially after taking such a long break. Good luck on your journey.
