Navigating My Postpartum Journey: A Raw Reflection
Navigating my postpartum journey has been filled with unexpected challenges and personal growth, from sleepless nights to discovering the strength I never knew I had. Learn more about my journey in this post.

It’s so sweet to finally be back into the rhythm of blogging and work, reconnecting with a part of myself I’ve genuinely missed. The last few months have been a whirlwind of emotions, filled with moments of pure joy and challenging lows that have tested me unexpectedly. Now that I’m finding my footing, I’m ready to share the raw truth about this postpartum journey—the highs, the lows, and everything in between.
The Beginning of My Postpartum Journey
Before I discuss my experiences these past few months, I wanted to clarify. The postpartum period is the set period it takes for a birthing person’s body to return to a nonpregnant state. Most medical professionals consider this anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks when the human body experiences many sudden physical and hormonal changes. But if you ask me, the postpartum period is much longer than that.
After nine months of vomiting, nausea, physical pain, and discomfort, I found myself finally going into labor two days earlier than expected. The labor took about 30 hours, but once it was time to deliver my beautiful baby girl, everything seemed to freeze in its place. Seeing her gorgeous face and open eyes made me realize this was the moment I was waiting for. I enjoyed my time at the hospital despite the lack of rest, constant knocking on the door, and inability to walk due to numbness from the epidural. My care team was very knowledgeable, kind, and understanding. I also appreciated having my partner, my mother, and his parents with me every step of the way. Once we were discharged from the hospital, the real postpartum journey began, and it was time for me to step into motherhood on my own.
Facing the Challenges
Dealing with Anxiety and Mental Stress During The First Few Weeks
The postpartum journey is a whirlwind of emotions and adjustments, and for me, it’s been a profoundly transformative experience, albeit challenging. Amidst the joy of welcoming my newborn, I’ve struggled with managing my anxiety due to fluctuating hormones and the overwhelming stress of caring for a newborn. My hormones have been in constant flux, making it challenging to maintain a sense of stability. The sheer exhaustion and overwhelming demands of new motherhood sometimes made it hard to remember even the simplest tasks, like taking my daily medication. Forgetfulness became a part of my daily routine, adding another layer of stress to an already challenging period.
The first initial week of being home with our baby girl was the toughest, both mentally and physically. Our daughter would cry nonstop despite us doing everything in our power to soothe her, and at some point, my partner and I held our baby, sat on the couch, and began crying, too. Thankfully, my mother and his parents would take the baby off our hands so that we could get a few additional hours of rest, which I can say for sure was needed.
Eventually, I started to get adjusted and began remembering to take my anxiety medication, which helped me a lot in recovering from the mental toll those first few weeks had taken on me.
The Impact of Postpartum Depression
As someone who is already predisposed to suffering from major depression, one thing that my partner and I feared was the possibility of me getting postpartum depression, which came true. After the first 6 to 8-week period, I could not shake off the extreme feeling of sadness, grief, and anger I had towards myself. There were also many instances in which I told my partner that I couldn’t be a good mom if I felt like this.
Postpartum depression is severe and can quickly become paranoia if not dealt with. Postpartum paranoia or psychosis is the next phase behind postpartum depression and is considered to be a mental health emergency. It typically includes symptoms such as:
- Delusions
- Hallucinations
- Overwhelming Anxiety
- Mania or Hyperactivity
- Insomnia
- Extreme Feelings of Depression
It can often occur with new parents as a result of sleep deprivation and hormone changes, which was the case for me. I was edging on the edges between depression, anxiety, and pure paranoia, and so I did what any reasonable person would do. Seek help. Despite my efforts to manage my mental health through weekly therapy, I found myself needing to seek psychiatric help to navigate this difficult phase. It was a humbling experience to admit that I needed more support, but it was also a crucial step towards healing. The combination of therapy and psychiatric care has been instrumental in helping me cope with the emotional turbulence and regain a sense of balance. But that alone was not enough to help me deal with the other challenges of being a new mom.
Dealing with an Abnormally Active Baby
One of the most unexpected challenges I’ve faced during my postpartum journey has been keeping up with my abnormally active baby, who seems to have little interest in the long, restful naps that every parenting book promises. Instead of the 2-3 hour stretches I was prepared for, my little one prefers to take short 5-15 minute catnaps, leaving me little time to rest, recover, or even catch my breath. This constant cycle of brief naps has been physically exhausting and mentally draining, forcing me to adapt quickly to a new rhythm I hadn’t anticipated. Balancing my recovery with the needs of an endlessly energetic baby has required patience, flexibility, and a deep well of resilience that I’m still learning to tap into each day.
Luckily, I have a vast support system, which helped me get the much-needed rest during her particularly odd active hours. During the first week, we were home with our little one. My mother graciously took my daughter for a few hours so my partner and I could sleep. We had already been up for almost 72 hours and reached the breaking point. She was crying nonstop, and we had no clue how to console her in the state we were in. After that, we’ve learned a few tricks to tire her out for naps and console her. But, when needed, I know I can also rely on his parents, who live above us, to come downstairs to offer their thoughtful insights and kind hands to help us regardless of the situation. It’s amazing how amazing it feels to have support during the postpartum period.

Adjusting to a New Schedule
I’m happy to have such a fantastic support system in my life. However, I wish they had warned me about how hard it is to make a schedule with a baby. Adjusting to a new schedule with a newborn has been a learning curve. I’ve had to adapt to a routine that revolves around feeding, changing, and comforting my baby while also managing my self-care. The transition has been far from smooth, and there are days when the struggle feels more pronounced. This is part of why I took an extended break from blogging—to focus on adjusting to my new reality and taking the time I needed to care for myself and my baby.
Embracing The Positives Of Postpartum
Cherishing the Small Moments
Amidst the challenges, there have been precious moments that have made this journey incredibly rewarding. Being on maternity leave from my regular job and blogging gave me more time to cherish and celebrate the small moments. For example, I got to witness the moment my daughter completed her first roll, even in the middle of the night. It’s a milestone I will always cherish. I even captured her first genuine giggles and laughter by singing the African lyrics in the Circle of Life from The Lion King song. Each tiny smile and every laugh is a reminder of the pure joy that comes with motherhood. Spending time with her, savoring those small, fleeting moments, has become a cherished part of my day. During pregnancy, I learned to embrace the present moment, and I am doing the same thing postpartum. These experiences, though simple, have brought me immense happiness and have been a source of strength as I navigate this new chapter.
Learning To Find Myself Outside of a Career
Becoming a mother has changed me in many ways. Before pregnancy, I prided myself on being a career woman with a stable job and future. However, now that I am a mother, I’ve been forced to sit down and think about who I am outside of my career or degree. Who do I want to be remembered as? What do I want to be? These past few moments have challenged me to relearn the things I was once so passionate about, such as working out, reading, socializing, and new hobbies. I’ve realized that I slowly was losing myself to the online world and employment, and I have been using this time to reconnect with who I used to be before that. Some of these things include looking for more positive ways to better myself in the postpartum journey through fitness, going out with friends more, spending time with myself, and reflecting on myself.

Embracing the Journey
Though the path hasn’t always been easy, I am learning to embrace the ups and downs of this postpartum period. Each day brings new challenges and triumphs, and I am slowly finding my rhythm. The extended break from blogging has allowed me to focus on my well-being and my baby’s needs, and I am grateful for the support I’ve received along the way.
Reflecting on my journey, I am reminded that while the difficulties are real, so are the moments of joy and connection. The small victories and the love I feel for my baby remind me that this journey is one of growth and profound love despite the struggles. I look forward to continuing this path, cherishing each moment with my little one, and sharing more of my experiences as I navigate the road ahead.
Conclusion
Reflecting on my postpartum journey, I realize it has been a profound lesson in embracing the unexpected and finding strength in the most challenging moments. Every day has brought hurdles, from navigating sleepless nights with an active baby to finding time for self-care amidst the chaos. Yet, it’s also been a period of immense growth and self-discovery. I’ve learned to be kinder to myself, accepting that motherhood is a journey without a roadmap and that it’s okay not to have everything figured out.
Through this experience, I’ve also discovered the importance of leaning on others and asking for help when needed. The love and support of my family, friends, and fellow moms have been invaluable, reminding me that I am never truly alone in this. While the days are often long and unpredictable, they are filled with moments of pure joy and connection that make it all worthwhile.
This journey has taught me to celebrate small victories, like a moment of quiet or a single, peaceful nap. As I continue to navigate this new chapter, I know there will be many more challenges ahead, but I am confident that I am growing stronger with each step. Most importantly, I’ve come to understand that every challenge, every sleepless night, and every unexpected turn shapes me into the mother I am meant to be.
