We all have dreams of who we want to be or what we want to achieve in life, but turning those dreams into a reality is where it starts to get tricky – and it’s why you need to set goals. It might be about mastering a new skill, improving your mental health, or maybe overcoming personal challenges, but whatever it is, the end result should be personal growth and moving forward.

Of course, it’s easy to say you need to make and reach your goals, but it’s harder to actually come up with them and put them in place. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be complicated as long as you take small steps rather than big ones. So let’s take a look at why it’s important to set goals for personal growth, and it might help you get started. Read on to find out more.

Why You Should Travel On A Personal Growth Journey

In an ideal world, everyone would go on a personal growth journey to become better versions of themselves. But that’s not the reality. There are some people who genuinely don’t care about doing some inner work and becoming better human beings, and that’s totally fine.

But, for those of us who choose to take this time. It’s important to note the why. There are so many reasons for why someone may want to improve themselves. For me, it’s about acknowledging my childhood trauma and how it’s affecting my everyday life. I want to become mentally stronger and physically healthier for my daughter. That’s my journey.

For other’s the reasons can vary. Some of the most common reasons are:

  • To improve their mental health and to heal from deep-rooted trauma subconsciously and consciously.
  • To feel physically better about themselves on the inside and out.
  • To figure out what they really want from life.
  • To discover their true passions and what drives them to succeed.
  • To change their life and make up for the bad decisions previously made.

Regardless of your reason for doing this, it’s still very important to find ways to measure how far you’re doing on this journey. This can be achieved by setting proper goals using the SMART method. Before, you set those goals, you might be wondering, why? Well, here are 3 important reasons for why need to set personal goals when going on a growth journey.

Why Is Setting Personal Goals Important To The Growth Journey?

Direction And Focus

The fact is that setting goals gives you a clear sense of direction for your personal journey and the growth that goes with it, and instead of wandering aimlessly and not knowing what decisions to make, unsure of how to improve or where to go next, goals help you focus on what’s important.

When your goals are easy to understand and well-defined, you’ll know precisely what steps you need to take to get where you want to go, and that’s going to mean your dreams can become a reality much more easily and quickly.

Motivation To Keep Moving Forward

If we’re honest (and if you’re honest with yourself), the path to personal growth isn’t always easy – there are sure to be bumps in the road, and it’s easy to lose steam along the way – some of those bumps might even mean you stop altogether and start to question what you’re actually doing. Well, this is where goals are going to be hugely helpful because they’re like little bits of motivation constantly reminding you about what it is you’re working towards.

If you think about it, every small win you get helps you feel more motivated to keep going, and it can be anything, big or small, that does it. Maybe you’ve gone to the gym every day just like you planned to, or perhaps you’ve stuck to all the commitments you made at drug and alcohol rehab, but whatever it is, once you see progress and you know you can do it, you’ll find it’s easier to keep pushing forward, and even if the steps are small, they’ll all be contributing to the bigger picture.

Building Confidence

Did you know that every time you hit a milestone, even if it’s a really tiny one, it’s going to build your confidence just a little bit more? It’s the sense of accomplishment you get that will do it, and if that builds up over time, you’re going to get really confident and in the end you’ll feel capable of achieving anything you put your mind to.

That means that setting (and achieving) goals shows you that you can face challenges head on, and you can prove to yourself that you’re strong enough to handle anything that comes your way.

Final Thoughts

If you are currently going through a personal growth journey, then congratulations! You made it through the toughest part, which is starting it. While navigating through these moments, make sure to set clear and concise goals that align with your purpose and can be easily tracked. Do not try to do everything at once, you will burnout.

Setting these goals, will make travelling down the personal growth journey a lot easier. You’ll be able to visualize and see how you are doing in comparison to the goals set. Plus, when you finally make it to the other side and start ticking off the goals as complete, it will make you feel good and motivate you in the long run.
