Is your child ready for school? Keep them happy and healthy this academic year with these 11 health and wellness items.

It’s August, so it’s time to start thinking about back to school season. But, unfortunately, the start of a new school year also means that you and your children will be exposed to millions of new germs and diseases, including the latest variants of Coronavirus. That’s why I’m sharing some important a list of wellness items for back to school season that you need to purchase.
Prepping the family for the upcoming school year can become stressful, so starting planning with health, wellbeing, and mental wellness is essential. So, in this post, I’m going to share my top 11 essential health and wellness items for back to school season.
Essential Wellness Items For Back To School
Updated Physicals & Immunizations
Depending on where you live and your child’s age, you may be due for some shots, new physicals, eye exams, and medical checkups. Physicals are essential to your child’s overall health and wellness, especially if they plan on participating in sports or other extracurricular activities. In addition, updated physicals and immunizations are the most critical wellness essential for back to school season.
In addition, your child must be up to date on vaccinations before the first day of school. Vaccination requirements vary by state and country, so check with your state/city/county health department for a current list.
For general information in the United States, please refer to the CDC website at
For people living in the UK, South Africa, India, or Asia, please refer to your local health agency or medical specialist.
Regardless of your beliefs, ensuring that your child is physically health is one of the biggest wellness essentials they need before heading into the physical classrooms. As always, talk to their doctor about any specific questions or health concerns.
Healthy Snacks and Lunches
There’s no better time to introduce healthier meal options to your child than at the start of a new school year. The back to school season also provides an excellent opportunity for you to develop the habit of meal planning, which will help you and your child in the long run.
Some of the healthy snacks or lunches I recommend are tasty fruits, veggies, hummus, crackers, homemade sandwiches, tuna, and even some light protein meals with chicken. I know many people recommend nuts and seeds. However, many children have an allergy to nuts, so please be wary of including them in the meal.
PCP and Sanitary Items
I don’t know about you, but carrying masks, hand sanitizer, and tissues is a must every school year. Children are germ monsters, which is terrible considering they are also the most vulnerable to the common cold and flu throughout the colder months. In addition, the Coronavirus is still rampant in some states and countries, so it’s even more critical to provide your child with the necessary equipment to fight these diseases.
Ensure you have a good stock of masks, hand sanitizers, baby wipes, alcohol wipes, and more to provide your children with throughout the school year. While these cannot stop your child from getting sick, they can help your child to stay more safe, happy, and healthy.
Feminine Products (For The Ones Who Experience Menstrual Cycle)
Before you scrunch your eyeballs and spew hateful comments, I want you to be aware that some girls experience their first periods as young as six. Yes, six years old. I had my first period when I was 8, which means any young girl can get one too.
Luckily, I was home when I experienced my first period. However, not all girls are as lucky. Prepping a small bag for them to take to school or to put in their lockers helps to save them from the public humiliation and embarrassment that comes with getting your period in the classroom.
Which type of feminine products your child needs depends on their flow, body type, and preference. Feminine products include period panties, panty liners, pads, menstrual cups, or tampons for young girls or adolescents who experience their monthly menstrual cycle.
Children’s Immunity Support Gummies
The key to healthy nutrition, exercise, adequate rest, and supplements, especially for children, is taking proper vitamins and supplements. As they return to school, they will be exposed to millions of germs. Luckily there are ways you can help boost your child’s immune system with support gummies.
One of my favorite immune support companies is Airborne. They create tons of tasty immune support gummies for children and adults, and the best part is that they are gelatin-free, gluten-free, have no added color, and have no added artificial sweeteners.
Stress Balls/Fidget Spinners/Sensory Items
No words can express how important it is for special needs children to be able to stim or express themselves healthily without causing harm to themselves or others. If you’re the parent of a special needs child or someone who needs additional IEP needs, then ensuring that they can adequately manage their emotions is a big part of helping them to stay healthy.
These wellness essentials for children and teens with special needs are necessary for transitioning smoothly into the daily school environment. If you’re unsure about which type of sensory item to buy your child, please consult their primary care provider (PCP), pediatrician, or health specialist.
First-Aid Materials
Nothing can prepare you for when your child seriously injures themselves. However, there are things you can do to prepare for when they get minor cuts, bruises, burns, and everything in-between.
It’s more important now than ever to keep up with your child’s health and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. While it’s impossible to shield them entirely from getting hurt, there are things you can do and buy to help prepare for those moments.
Children’s Medicine
It’s challenging to keep up with a child’s health, especially during the Fall and Winter seasons. Children are more susceptible to getting sick from the cold or flu during these times. Unfortunately, nothing can prepare you for the moment your child gets sick, which is why you must prepare yourself for when the moment comes. The best way to prepare for your child to get sick this school season is to purchase all the health and wellness supplies you need during your back to school shopping rounds.
Please speak to your child’s provider about which medicines and brands may best suit them.
Reusable Water Bottles
Children exert energy throughout the day, so they must stay consistently hydrated and avoid those sugary and overly-sweetened beverages. Since children are always on-the-go, having a reusable water bottle is a great way to remind them to drink water as they play.
Drinking adequate amounts of water helps children stay alert, improves cognitive functions, and helps retain short-term memory. Other benefits of drinking water include properly regulating body temperature, preventing sickness and disease, and improving the digestive system.
There are several factors to consider when shopping for water bottles: size, insulation, and safety. If you don’t know what type of bottle to purchase, you could always ask a pediatrician for assistance.
Children’s Alarm Clock
As children ease their way back into their classroom schedules, they may experience some difficulty maintaining their usual daily routines. Maintaining a regular schedule is essential in a child’s life because it influences their emotional, cognitive, and social development. They help children feel secure and comfortable. They help children understand the environment’s expectations, thus reducing the likelihood of tantrums.
One way to help your child become independent and understand their schedule is to use pictures, colors, and objects recognizable to the child. As you’re teaching the child to familiarize themselves with the schedule, put it somewhere visible where the child can see it.
Adequate Clothing
As the weather gets colder, you and your child must be prepared for the unexpected. Before the school year starts, go through the closet and throw out anything old, raggedy, or too small and take note of it. If anything essential needs to be replaced, such as jeans, sweaters, sneakers, snow boots, raincoats, and other weather-dependent clothing.
What you need varies depending on where you live, so always check the weather and use prior knowledge to determine which types of clothes your child might need this school year.
What Other Essential Items Do You Need For The Back To School Season?
Before shopping for any of the items above, please consult a doctor, pediatrician, or your child’s specialist.
While it’s essential to ensure your child’s happiness, health, and safety, there are other things that your child needs, such as school supplies, tutoring sessions, babysitters, and more.
Suppose you’re ever looking for other health and wellness essentials for back to school or other related back to school shopping lists, ideas, or recommendations. In that case, I recommend checking out Pinterest, which will have lots of lists for you. You could also ask your child’s teacher for a list of things they may need for the classroom and go off that list.
Did you like everything on this list? How are you preparing for the back to school season? Let me know in the comments.

I always have a reusable water bottle. Everyone should have them and stop wasting money and the planets resources on bottled water. So wasteful. You’re also not wrong about children being germ monsters. I sweat some families seem to constantly become I’ll because of their children
I agree that people need to try harder to not be soo wasteful. I do understand the convivence of them, but I like to think about the long-term effects. Children are super susceptible to germs, which is why I always carry cleaning and sanitizing products with me.
cool items. Thanks for the recommendations
Of course! I hope you saw something you like.
Great list of products! Re-usable water bottles are fantastic and so are reusable food containers & washable baggies to help reduce waste if you are someone who sends your kid to school with a packed lunch.

Thanks for reading.
I have recently starting going to a more zero-waste lifestyle. It is so much healthier. My favorite reusable items are pads for my period (just wash with peroxide and an eco-friendly laundry soap) and water bottles. Hydro Flask has become my favorite, and I found a lid with a straw, so I’m not having to open and close the lid constantly, or touching it with both my hands and my mouth. Which is especially important in the colder months when germs run rampant. This list is important, and I carry most of these things myself, so it is helpful for anyone, not just those going back to school.
I’ve never thought about using a reusable pad until more recently, but I personally prefer period panties since they can be washed more efficiently. Germs run super rampant in the colder months, that’s why you have to prepare to adequality take care of yourself.
healthy snacks are essential to me as well! Amazon is my best source because I can slowly google and check everything without the heat of the moment.
I like Amazon too, however I’ve been trying to eat more locally sourced food lately.
These are all great items – even if I am not going back to school they are good to be organised and ready for work too!
YESS! I agree. As I was writing this, I thought about how some of these items are gret for just taking care of yourself in general.
There are some great suggestions on here. I love that our society is becoming more understanding of mental health of all ages, including children. The fact that we are embracing fidget spinners and similar items is opening the door for children that otherwise may have struggled to perform to their full potential. Great list of suggestions here.
Hi Britt, I’m also glad! I feel like by acknowledging mental health in children and providing them with the things they need to succeed academically such as sensory toys, fidget spinners, and other things, we can really make a difference in improving their overall educational experience.
These are great suggestions for getting ready for back to school.
A lot of parents / carers will benefit from this.
I agree, especially as the flu starts to rampage in the fall and winter seasons.
