Regardless of age, every woman should prioritize their health. Check out this list of 10 healthy habits women can incorporate into their daily routine for a healthier lifestyle.
Do you find it hard to make time for yourself? I know I do. I’m constantly on the go, and when my schedule becomes packed, I find it challenging to take care of my health and practice self-care. But that’s no excuse. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be challenging for busy women, career women, mothers, and all-women.
Incorporating healthy habits into your daily routine will help you take charge of your overall health, eliminate stress, and be happier. So, here are 10 healthy habits every woman should have regardless of age.
Healthy Habits Every Woman Should Have
Regularly Exercising
A regular fitness routine is vital for many reasons. It has many health benefits, such as losing weight and reducing the risk of metabolic and non-communicable illnesses like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer.
Regularly exercising helps women balance hormones, improve mood, boost energy, and reduce overall physical and mental stress. Women can take care of their physical health in many ways, including going to the gym, jogging, running, playing with the children, doing yoga, and even doing active household chores like vacuuming and sweeping.
Having Good Hygiene
I shouldn’t have to explain this, but you would be surprised. I’ve met many women with poor hygiene skills, so I think this would be an excellent time to remind you to clean yourself, especially during menstruation. Cleaning yourself boosts your confidence and helps you avoid contracting or spreading harmful germs and diseases to your loved ones.
Some essential hygiene habits you should have are:
- Showering
- Washing your hands
- Cleaning your hair
- Taking care of the vagina (yes, I said it).
- Not putting harmful chemicals in our bodies is not meant for the body inside us.
Getting A Wellness Visit At Your Gynecologist
Not only is this an excellent way to practice self-care, but it’s also essential. Gynecology is an integral part of women’s health care for all women. A gynecologist specializes in addressing the specific needs of all women throughout various stages of their life.
Women between the ages of 21 and 29 should receive a gynecological exam every year or as soon as they become sexually active. Visiting a gynecologist is one of the best healthy habits for every woman and also counts as a form of sexual self-care.
Get Adequate Sleep
Regardless of age, sleep is essential for maintaining proper metabolism and having energy for the next day. Yet, studies show that women typically report having more sleep difficulties and are at a higher risk of being diagnosed with insomnia (Nowakowski et al.). In addition, 40% of all women are more likely to experience this due to hot flashes, menstruation, menopause, pregnancy, and mental health illnesses.
The statistics are crazy, considering adults should get 8 to 10 hours of sleep daily. Of course, as you get older, it will be more difficult for you to fall asleep, especially as a woman. But fret not. Here are some tips for falling asleep easier.
- Stop using your phone at least 1.5 hours before bed
- Don’t eat past 8:00 PM
- Take a warm to a hot shower
- Drink warm milk or tea
Eat Healthy & Drink Water
We all know the importance of balancing a healthy meal and drinking water throughout the day. However, most women struggle with this. It’s essential for women always to keep their bodies hydrated and filled with nutrients.
Not eating healthy or drinking water can have adverse side effects such as feeling tired, getting ill more often, hair loss, skin problems, weight gain, and sometimes death. Overeating and undereating also have negative consequences on the body that are ignored for the sake of looking good.
If you want to change your diet or restrict yourself from certain food groups, please talk to your doctor first.
Journaling
I’m going to continue to advocate for journaling. Journaling is a potent mental health self-care practice that all women benefit from. Women are natural nurturers, and many are incredibly empathetic. But unfortunately, this can sometimes make it difficult to process our emotions or express ourselves with a healthy outlet.
Journaling helps control symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress while improving mood. Women can use many different styles of journaling, such as bullet journaling, list journaling, diary format, and even writing prompts. Journaling allows women to vent without exploding on the people around them.

Spend Time Alone
I cold-heartedly mean this. It would help if you spent more time alone. As women, we are surrounded by children, partners, jobs, family, friends, and other stimuli. Sometimes, we even feel like there is no time for ourselves. But that’s not true.
Take 10 to 20 minutes daily to spend time with yourself. You’d be surprised at how relieved you will feel afterward. Spending time alone allows the rest of the world to continue spinning while you rest, refuel, and regroup. Time alone can be as simple as sitting quietly outdoors, meditating in the guest bedroom, doing solo yoga, or even getting comfy with your favorite book.
Talk To A Therapist
Many women are under the impression that they have to tackle the world on their own. However, most cis and transgender women experience some biological, environmental, societal, sexual, and psychosocial challenges that can impact their mental health.
Women are the most likely to be diagnosed with postpartum depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety. A therapist, psychiatrist, or psychologist can handle these mental health matters. They can offer unbiased advice about navigating these difficulties and teach healthy coping mechanisms. Going to therapy is probably one of the most underrated and best healthy habits to have as a woman for their mental health.
Have A Self-Care Day
I cannot stress this enough. Ladies, you must make room for self-care. I don’t care if you can only squeeze one minute in. It would help if you did it. Practicing self-care is super important because it improves your overall physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Many health benefits come with practicing daily self-care, such as:
- Increased resilience
- Improved mood
- Having better stress coping mechanisms
- Increased lifespan
Practicing self-care is a healthy habit every woman should have. It allows you to produce happiness and transmit those feelings to the people around you.
Step Away From Technology
Unplugging from social media and technology feels excellent. You notice much more when you’re not paying attention to a computer screen. Social media and technology are some of the biggest contributors to negative body image, low self-esteem, and mental health illnesses such as depression and anxiety.
Unplugging allows you to escape online negativity and gives your brain a clean slate. It also gives you time for reflection, meditating, practicing gratitude, and focusing on the more positive things in life.
How Can Live A Healthy Lifestyle Better You?
Women need to live healthier lifestyles to function properly. We are bombarded with supplements and cosmetics that promise“healthy living.” However, consistency and motivation are the secrets to living a healthier lifestyle. You have to want to change to see the change.
These 10 healthy habits can help all women, cis and transgender alike, start a wellness journey, or improve their overall health. Women are the foundation of life, and everything revolves around our well-being. So, make sure you take care of it well.

This was a lovely read thank you, I always keep on top of my water drinking, my body tells me otherwise. And I do get some time to myself every couple of weeks when my daughter is at her dad’s, you’re right I feel I need it too. Just goes to show we need to listen to our bodies and keep them maintained healthily x

Hi Jeanette, I love how you mentioned this. I think a lot of us tend to ignore our bodies, and we should be learning to listen to them more.

I am the worst for consistency with self-care. I tend to add one thing into the routine, really enjoy it and then try to introduce another and eventually it all topples down. BUT – it is something I am constantly working on and I notice such a difference. I think I need to take it a little slower and really ingrain items into my routine instead of the go big or go home approach. Some of the most significant habits I’ve enjoyed is regular exercise, a decent sleep routine, water and journaling. Thanks for the great read and the reminder to get back into it!

Hi Morgan, Thanks for commenting. Having a consistent routine is harder than it looks. I also still struggle with it. One thing I’ve done is take baby steps. So right now, I am only doing one new in the morning and night, habit which is morning yoga and nightly journaling. I think learning to ease into these habits will make it easier to stick to them.

One of my new favorite things I’ve done for my health is really focus on the products I’m using and how toxic they can be. It’s funny you mentioned menstruation earlier. I have recently switched from store-bought single use pads and tampons (the fake flowery smell is seriously unhealthy for us down there) to eco-friendly reusable pads, along with an eco-friendly dermatologist-approved laundry soap. Both have made a pretty significant difference in how I feel and take care of myself. The laundry soap has helped me to improve my sleep quality because I struggled with allergies and breathing issues from the scents in traditional laundry soap. I hadn’t really considered these things to be forms of self-care, but they really are! I’m glad I’m on the right path, but your post has definitely reminded me of where I can improve too, and I appreciate that! My next goal will be to take more time alone each day, without my phone, and just give myself 30 minutes to breathe and do something for myself.
Seriah Sargenton says
Hi Erica,
I’m actually working on switching my mensuration products to something eco-friendly and better for my body. I’ve slowly stopped using the scented washes and fragrance cleaners (messes with your natural PH balance). That’s a lovely health goal to have for yourself, I am also working on having more me time throughout the day and meditating.
