I’ve recently started holding myself accountable to practicing gratitude more often, especially via journaling. Most people think gratitude simply saying please and thank you to someone. Or something you do once a year when families come together for Thanksgiving. But, gratitude is more than that.

Gratitude is the art of being more intentional with focusing on the positive things you have in your life. It’s acknowledging the things around you that make your life beautiful such as being able to drink clean water or having to high-quality education. It’s a lifestyle that can transform your mental and emotional well-being.

By intentionally focusing on the positive aspects of your life, you cultivate a sense of contentment and resilience that carries you through challenges. One of my new favorite ways of practicing gratitude is through journaling, but there are so many ways one can do this. In this post, you’ll get all the information you need to start practicing daily gratitude and turn it into a consistent habit.

Why Does Gratitude Matter?

Studies show that people who practice gratitude are generally happier and less likely to suffer from mental health illnesses. Gratitude also comes with positive health benefits such as:

  • Boosting mood: Gratitude is known to boost your happiness levels, otherwise known as serotonin and dopamine.
  • Improve Relationships: Being able to communicate gratitude and appreciation can help people feel more positive and help foster deeper connections with others.
  • Helps Fostering Positive Thinking: Gratitude helps you to see the good in the little things therefore creating a more positive mindset.

Incorporating gratitude into your daily routine isn’t just about reflecting on major events – it’s about finding joy in life’s simple moments, that’s why you have to find the method that works for you.

How To Practice Gratitude

There are so many ways to practice gratitude. But, if you’re just starting your journey to creating a more positive mindset via gratitude, then it may not be such a bad idea to start with the simpler ones and then work your way up to additional habits. Here are some of the ways you can start practicing gratitude.

Use A Gratitude Jar

Creating a gratitude jar is one of the easiest things you can do, and you don’t even have to use an actual jar. For this, you would write one thing you are grateful for on a sticky note or strip of paper and stick it inside the jar. You can also use a cardboard box, water jug, or even a flower vase. The idea is to physically see how much you have to be grateful for as your ‘jar’ fills up.

Use Gratitude Affirmations

Affirmations are a powerful tool for creating a more positive mindset. There are so many different affirmations that are related to gratitude. Simply pick 3-5 from a list online, stand by the mirror, and say them to yourself every day until it start to stick. You can also create your affirmations and do the same thing! Here are a few gratitude affirmations to get you started.

  1. I am grateful for the things that give me comfort and joy in times of stress.
  2. I am grateful for the people who love me for who I am.
  3. I am grateful for the life I have.
  4. I am grateful and kind towards myself.
  5. I am grateful for the happiness and joy I bring others.

Gratitude Journaling

Journaling gives you a space to process your thoughts, release stress, and reflect on the good in your life. The key to making gratitude journaling effective is consistency. This doesn’t mean writing lengthy entries every day – even a few sentences will make a difference.

How to Start Your Gratitude Journaling Practice

If you’re unsure where to begin, follow these simple steps:

  1. Buy a journal that works for you: Journaling should be tailored towards your wants and needs, plus there are different styles of it. If you are creative, you may prefer a bullet journal. You can also buy a journal that comes with premade gratitude practices in it.
  2. Be Consistent: A habit takes 21 days to form and 90 to make permanent. Be consistent with your journaling practice.
  3. Be Specific: Instead of writing “I’m thankful for my family,” try something more focused, like, “I’m grateful for the conversation I had with my sister today.”
  4. Practice Self-Compassion: If you miss a day or two, don’t be hard on yourself. \

Final Thoughts

Now is the perfect time for change and reflection. Gratitude is a powerful way to capture the beauty of mindful moments, allowing you to appreciate the small joys life offers. Whether it’s the first sip of a pumpkin spice latte, the comfort of a warm sweater, or a thoughtful conversation with a loved one, there’s always something to be grateful for.

Remember, gratitude isn’t about waiting for extraordinary moments – it’s about recognizing the magic in the everyday. So grab your journal, light a fall-scented candle, and take a moment to reflect on all the good in your life. You’ll be surprised how these small, consistent acts of gratitude can transform your mindset and create a more joyful, fulfilling life.
