Affirmation or self-talk is the internal dialogue with the subconscious mind; the truth is that affirmations can be both positive and negative self-talk. We tend to engage in self-talk in our routine by thinking or speaking about ourselves, our lives, and our current state of mind without being aware of it.
Remember that once someone asked you to play a game, you responded, “Nah, I’m too bad at this….” Well, guess what? That is an affirmation! By saying this loudly or thinking about it, you affirm that you suck at this, and your brain bends that belief to make it a reality.
On the other hand, if you respond with a positive statement such as “Sure, I’m pretty certain I can learn this game in no time!” then the brain believes it can learn quickly and again, bending to that belief to make it a reality.
So, the short answer to the question is – Yes! They do work. However, more often than not, people use them to affirm negative beliefs rather than positive ones. If you’re looking for ways to integrate affirmations positively into your life, keep reading this article!
How Positive Affirmations Affect You
Since positive affirmations are about success, positivity, and productivity, they inspire and motivate you to achieve your goals. You can create a positive mental attitude with positive self-talk by tricking your brain into creating new belief systems or upgrading the old ones.
In addition to that, doing so can help you A LOT in certain situations, such as:
- It enables you to stay motivated when you feel demotivated
- It inspires you when you are looking for inspiration
- You can develop good health habits
- It improves your mental health
The bottom line is that these positive affirmations and self-talk allow you to improve things. You are cheerful about life and don’t feel miserable anymore because you’ve managed to break into your subconscious and rewire it.
How Negative Affirmations Affect You
Contrary to positive affirmations, negative affirmations are destructive. Negative self-talk makes you feel bad and miserable. Furthermore, it does not allow you to change your thoughts/viewpoints and bring about good change.
Furthermore, the negative ones focus on problems and failures rather than your ability to overcome them. Having negative self-talk only makes the problems bigger because:
- It causes low self-esteem
- You feel little or no hope
- It reinforces the feeling of the victim
- You feel stressed
For example, when you tell yourself things like “I am a failure,” you allow yourself to feel even more miserable.
Making a Shift From Negative To Positive Affirmations
Since negative affirmations will not create results, you must shift from negative to positive affirmations to live a happy, positive, and meaningful life. As Donna Karan says, “Delete the negative; accentuate the positive!” To do this, firstly, you must promise to accept and acknowledge the negative thoughts rather than attach to them and make them linger for longer.
Once you acknowledge those thoughts, try not to take them so seriously, and don’t let them unfold as an entire story in your head. Don’t dwell on your negative thoughts. Secondly, learn to reverse the negative statements. A straightforward strategy is to replace every negative phrase with a positive one.
For instance, when you feel worthless, tell yourself that you are worthy, or instead of saying, “This is impossible to do,” try and say, “There is probably at least one way to do this.”
Thirdly and most importantly, write down the positive for every negative one. By doing this, you will see a shift that will make your negative thoughts disappear, and you will be able to focus more on positivity.

Doing Daily Affirmations
Positive affirmations are a powerful way to develop positive thoughts daily because repeating specific phrases makes your brain more believable. The best part? You can use positive statements for self-love, work, stress management, self-esteem, success, and more.
You can find various affirmations online, but remember that developing your affirmations is the best way to FEEL them and, thus, make them more believable for your brain.
While developing your affirmations, an important thing to remember and consider is always focusing on well-meaning positivity and facts.
Conclusion
We hold several limiting beliefs, which lead to us affirming negative things about ourselves out loud or internal self-talk. Affirmations can make or break you, so mastering self-talk is essential for your greater good and success.
Try to analyze yourself, eliminate everything negative that you keep believing about yourself, and replace it with something more likely to bring about a positive outcome.
So what are you waiting for? Start doing your daily affirmations and rewire your belief system!

I hadn’t considered what negative affirmations are, but it appears I’ve been engaging with them on a near daily basis my whole life. Never had any success in replacing them however
It takes time to combat negative affirmations and understanding how they can negatively impact your life. I’d say start slow and work your way up.
Affirmations are incredible, I’m a total convert considering I was really closed off to giving them a try (and now I love sharing the ones I use on my site) — they can really shift our mindset to something more constructive and nurturing. I love that you’ve mentioned they can be incorporated into all aspects of our lives — thank you for sharing!
Molly, I love affirmations. It’s honestly the best thing that I’ve ever learned about. Ever since I started using them more often, I’ve discovered that my mindset is shifting, and I’m getting better at combating negative thinking and mindsets. Thanks for reading.
I’ve recently been trying to use for affirmations throughout the day by writing them on post its and sticking them on my monitor so I see them and say them out loud. You’ve outlined a lot of great points about how powerful our self talk can be! Thanks for sharing.
Alex, I do the same thing. I write some affirmations on sticky notes and stick them to my computer. I also write them in my journal the night before so that I can read it the next morning.
Great tips, we definitely need to work on these and daily life. I’ve seen a lot of people start doing and getting all the negative off of their minds.
Fransic, I’ve also seen this. I definitely believe that people are starting to notice their negative thinking and behaviors more and are trying to overcome them.
I love the tips Riyah! I didn’t realise until you mentioned it, but I’ve been saying negative affirmations for years. I hate that I have and I try really hard not to. I’ve started saying some positive affirmations and I’m hoping they will help me believe in myself more x
Caroline,
We’ve all said negative affirmations. It takes time to learn how to combat those negative affirmations with positive ones until you learn how to shift your mindset properly. I’m pretty sure you’re not alone in not realizing how often you use negative affirmations.
Wonderful post! Affirmations are so powerful. I’ve started practicing gratitude twice a day and am going to start incorporating affirmations as well. They’re great reminders that set you up to be the best version of yourself. Thanks for sharing!
Hi, Yes! I’m starting to incorporate affirmations into my daily routine and started using sticky notes whenever I feel down. I love practicing gratitude. Every morning I wake up and list a few things that I’m grateful for.
I think affirmations are really important as long as they cover what is true and what we are striving to achieve 🙂 So instead of “I’m bad at maths” or to “I’m great at maths” I would personally say “I’m improving at maths, and it’s getting easier to use” AND make sure to be actually working on my maths, taking a class or finding online info or employing a tutor. I mean that’s not for all affirmations as you’d know, and things are true about ourselves as we are enough NOW, like “I am beautiful”. I totally agree with how they can really change your outlook!
