Stay cozy and healthy this winter with these self-care tips! From journaling to skincare, this post offers ways to prioritize your well-being during the colder months.

As the weather becomes more relaxed and denser, taking care of yourself and your body is essential. That’s where winter self-care comes in. Unfortunately, winter tends to be harsher due to the lack of light and freezing temperatures. As a result, we’re more prone to catching a common cold or flu and even seasonal depression (for some of us).
As the seasons change, we must adjust our self-care routines to accommodate the weather, daylight changes, schedules, etc. So, we need specific self-care activities that meet the needs of these winter changes.
So, I am sharing ten winter self-care ideas perfect for caring for your mental and physical health during winter.
Winter Self-Care Ideas
- Write In A Journal: Research shows that journaling can lower the effects of depression and anxiety and help with learning how to cope with change and negative emotions. It’s a place to dump all your feelings and worries throughout the day without being judged.
- Go Outside: During the winter, the sun goes away quicker. Therefore, getting as much sunlight as possible during the day is essential to get a natural source of Vitamin D and energy.
- Organize Something: We tend to slack off once the weather becomes cold. Instead, choose a day to organize your dresser, work area, kitchen, or another area of the house that needs a little attention.
- Stay Physically Active: Exercise is essential for maintaining your body and health and lowering mortality rates. There are many ways to stay active during the winter that don’t include going to the gym. You can run, do active household chores, play with the children, and even do an at-home workout with a Youtube video.
- Drink Plenty Of Water: One of the best ways to practice winter self-care is to stay hydrated. You may get tired of me saying this, but drinking water is crucial, especially as the weather gets cold.
- Practice Gratitude: Whenever I feel down, I pick up my bullet journal or self-care planner and start thinking about what I am grateful for. Gratitude helps you to appreciate the more minor things in life and realize what you have in front of you.
- Surround Yourself With Plants or Nature: Spending time with nature can significantly improve your mental health and well-being. While the plants may die due to the weather, you can still surround yourself with nature by buying a few household plants. Then, whenever you miss the warm weather, you can tend to your plants and watch them grow.
- Rest: Getting 08 or more hours of sleep is vital for everyone, especially in the winter. The days are longer, and the sun sets sooner, so you have to plan your day accordingly.
- Use A Thick Moisturizer: Your skin tends to become extremely dry, flaky, and vulnerable in the winter. Treat yourself with an excellent thick moisturizer so that your skin feels good therefore making you feel good.
- DIY Something: The winter season is the perfect time for connecting with your creative side. Grab some paper, parchment, crayons, or whatever is around the house, and make something that will make you feel good.
Why You Must Practice Winter Self-Care
Many of us go to work during the winter season, come home, shower, eat, and then go to bed. It’s only natural. The days are shorter and darker, and finding the willpower to care for yourself is challenging.
Practicing self-care in the winter will help you stay healthy and happy while getting through the season in one piece. Compared to any other season, winter self-care is the most important because it’s when you are most likely to slack off.
Building that discipline and ensuring you care for yourself even on the darkest days will help you quickly do the same once the weather becomes too warm.

These are all great tips! I’ve personally been organizing my closet, and donating things/clothes that I don’t need anymore.
April,
That’s great! I’m in the process of cleaning my wardrobe and trying to be more materialistic with my clothing choices.
Great ideas! I love to organise everything before Christmas comes around and getting outside in the cool fresh air gives me a festive feeling.
Vourneen,
I love going outside around the holiday season and looking at all of the pretty festive Christmas lights, trees, and whatnot. It’s a perfect time also to practice some gratitude.
I love these winter self-care ideas! My favourite is to surround yourself in plants – my desk is covered in them haha. Drinking water in the summer is relatively easy, but the winter is where I tend to forget easlier. Thank you for the reminder 💖
Caroline,
I’m glad to hear about the plants. I have a few plants all over the house and I recently bought a new water bottle to remind myself to stay hydrated.
Love these ideas! I’m struggling to keep myself hydrated lately and I’m definitely starting to notice how negatively it’s affecting me. Maybe I should treat myself to nice new water bottle…

Saph,
It’s harder to stay hydrated in the wintertime versus any other time of the year. If you are ever looking for new water bottle suggestions, please let me know.
