What Are The 08 Dimensions Of Self-Care?
The 8 dimensions of self-care encompass various aspects of our well-being and provide a comprehensive framework for nurturing ourselves. These dimensions include physical, emotional, mental, social, environmental, occupational, spiritual, and financial well-being. Each dimension is vital to our overall health and requires attention and care. Physically, we care for our bodies through exercise, nutrition, and rest. Emotionally, we acknowledge and process our feelings, practicing self-compassion and self-expression.
Intellectually, we engage in lifelong learning and stimulate our minds. Socially, we nurture healthy relationships and connect with others. Environmentally, we create spaces that promote well-being and sustainability. Occupationally, we find fulfillment and balance in our work. Spiritually, we explore our beliefs and find meaning and purpose. Financially, we manage our resources and plan for our future. Recognizing and addressing each dimension ensures a well-rounded self-care practice supporting our physiological, social, and physical well-being. It is essential to prioritize self-care from each dimension to experience wellness and lead a fulfilling life.
Physical
Physical self-care, or fitness or physical activity, involves regular exercise, healthy eating, adequate sleep, and proper hygiene. Physical self-care is a fundamental dimension of the 08 dimensions of self-care, as it forms the foundation for overall well-being. When we prioritize physical self-care, we improve our physical health and mental and emotional well-being. Regular exercise boosts our energy levels, improves mood, and reduces stress. Nourishing our bodies with nutritious foods supports optimal functioning and fuels daily activities. Getting sufficient rest and practicing good hygiene contribute to our vitality and rejuvenation. By incorporating physical self-care into our self-care routine, we support our bodies in maintaining balance and spirit, allowing us to show up fully in other areas of our lives. It is an essential component of the 08 dimensions of self-care, enabling us to thrive holistically.
Emotional
Emotional self-care or well-being focuses on nurturing our emotional well-being. It involves recognizing, understanding, and managing our emotions healthily and constructively. Emotional self-care encompasses activities and practices that allow us to express, process, and regulate our feelings effectively. This dimension is crucial to our overall well-being, as our emotional state significantly impacts our thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. Emotional self-care cultivates self-awareness, develops resilience, and enhances our emotional intelligence. It involves engaging in activities that bring us joy, such as practicing mindfulness, journaling, seeking therapy or counseling, connecting with supportive individuals, and engaging in creative outlets. By prioritizing emotional self-care, we create space for emotional growth, healing, and balance, contributing to our overall health and fulfillment.
This self-care dimension is easily confused with mental health. Like mental self-care, the phrase emotional well-being, or emotional self-care, can easily be used in conversation, even if no one knows the term’s meaning. Mental well-being focuses on how we mentally cope with our feelings. In comparison, emotional well-being is about how our emotions affect our perceptions and how we emotionally react to situations.
Mental
Mental health self-care involves taking proactive steps to maintain and improve our mental health beyond emotional well-being. While emotional self-care centers around managing and expressing emotions, mental self-care encompasses activities that enhance cognitive function, promote mental clarity, and reduce stress.
In recent years, society has grown to acknowledge and prioritize mental health, recognizing the importance of seeking support and engaging in self-care practices to maintain a healthy mind. This shift has fostered a more accepting environment that encourages individuals to prioritize their mental well-being. Engaging in mindfulness meditation, cognitive exercises, practicing positive self-talk, seeking therapy or counseling, and engaging in hobbies stimulating the mind are all examples of mental self-care. By dedicating time and effort to our mental health, we can improve our overall well-being and experience greater resilience, clarity, and emotional balance.
Social
People are born social. It’s just as essential to foster and nurture your relationships with others as to take care of yourself. Social self-care ensures a positive, caring, healthy, and supportive inner circle surrounds you. Everyone needs a friend to talk to, whether you’re an introvert, extrovert, or ambivert.
Social self-care is an integral part of the 8 dimensions of self-care, focusing on nurturing our relationships, connecting with others, and fostering a sense of belonging. It involves developing and maintaining healthy social connections, engaging in meaningful interactions, setting boundaries, and prioritizing our emotional well-being. Social self-care acknowledges the importance of human connection in promoting overall wellness.
We can enhance our social well-being by cultivating supportive relationships, participating in social activities, and expressing ourselves authentically. Social self-care plays a crucial role in our emotional and mental health, providing a support system and opportunities for personal growth and fulfillment. It helps us feel valued, understood, and connected to the world. By prioritizing social self-care, we can cultivate a sense of belonging, reduce feelings of isolation, and enhance our overall quality of life.

This self-care dimension is about having an organized, well-maintained, and clutter-free environment, having clean clothes, and a clean and well-maintained mode of transport. This dimension of self-care emphasizes the impact of our physical surroundings on our overall health. Taking care of our environment can reduce stress, enhance productivity, and improve our quality of life. Environmental self-care includes:
- Decluttering and organizing our living spaces.
- Surround ourselves with nature.
- Practicing eco-friendly habits.
- Minimizing exposure to toxins.
By cultivating a clean, harmonious, and aesthetically pleasing environment, we create a space that supports our well-being and contributes to our overall sense of calm and balance. Environmental self-care plays a crucial role within the 08 dimensions of self-care, as it directly influences our physical well-being, promotes a sense of connection with our surroundings, and contributes to a sustainable and nurturing lifestyle.

Occupational self-care involves recognizing the importance of finding purpose, satisfaction, and meaning in our work, directly impacting our overall well-being. It encompasses setting boundaries, managing stress, cultivating healthy work relationships, and pursuing professional growth and development. Engaging in occupational self-care allows us to experience a sense of accomplishment, motivation, and fulfillment in our daily lives. Caring for our occupational well-being can reduce work-related stress, enhance productivity, and maintain healthy work-life integration. It is essential to prioritize occupational self-care to ensure a balanced, harmonized, and fulfilling life.
Spiritual
Spiritual self-care is a dimension of self-care that focuses on nurturing our inner selves, finding meaning, and connecting with something greater than ourselves. It consists of actions to deepen the relationship between us and our “higher self,” or the part of us wanting to connect with something greater than ourselves. It involves exploring our beliefs, values, and purpose in life. Spiritual self-care can include practices such as meditation, prayer, reflection, mindfulness, and engaging in activities that bring us a sense of peace and connection. It plays a significant role within the 08 dimensions of self-care by providing a foundation for overall well-being.
When we cultivate our spiritual well-being, we tap into a source of strength, resilience, and inner peace that can positively influence other areas of our lives. It helps us gain clarity, find meaning, and navigate life’s challenges with a greater sense of purpose and fulfillment. By nurturing our spiritual selves, we deepen our self-awareness, cultivate gratitude, and foster a sense of interconnectedness with the world around us. Spiritual self-care is a guidepost for our values, beliefs, and actions, ultimately supporting our holistic well-being and contributing to a more meaningful and purposeful life.

Financial
Financial self-care refers to the intentional and responsible management of our economic well-being. It involves creating healthy financial habits, setting goals, and making informed financial decisions. Financial self-care recognizes our financial situation’s impact on our overall well-being and the interconnectedness of our economic health with other dimensions of self-care. Taking care of our finances reduces stress and anxiety related to money, which can significantly impact our emotional and physical well-being.
Financial self-care allows us to create a sense of stability and security, which contributes to our overall peace of mind. It also enables us to align our financial goals with our values and priorities, giving us a sense of purpose and fulfillment. It involves practicing mindful spending, budgeting, saving, and planning for the future. By including financial self-care as one of the dimensions of self-care, we acknowledge the importance of financial well-being in our holistic approach to self-care and recognize its role in supporting our overall health and happiness.
Why Are These Self-Care Dimensions Important?
The self-care dimensions are critical because they encompass different aspects of our well-being, allowing us to take a comprehensive approach to self-care. Each dimension addresses specific needs and characteristics of our lives, contributing to our health and happiness. By nurturing these dimensions, we create a solid foundation for our well-being. For example, focusing on physical self-care ensures that our bodies are nourished, strong, and capable of supporting us in daily activities. Emotional self-care helps us manage stress, process emotions, and cultivate resilience.
Intellectual self-care stimulates our minds, promotes personal growth, and keeps us curious and engaged. Social self-care fosters healthy relationships, connection, and a sense of belonging. Environmental self-care creates harmonious and supportive spaces that promote well-being. Occupational self-care ensures a healthy work-life balance and fulfillment in our careers. Spiritual self-care allows us to explore our beliefs, values, and purpose. Lastly, financial self-care enables us to manage our resources and create stability for our future. By recognizing the importance of each dimension and incorporating them into our self-care routine, we can experience holistic well-being and lead more fulfilling lives.

Mental health is so important. I’ve been trying to reduce my social media time, as well as eating healthier & drinking more water!
Same! I feel like my mood is a lot better when I am not on TikTok all day and after exercise.
Great post with lots of information on the different levels of self-care!
Thanks!
Self care is very important to me as a freelancer with a chronic illness. Without self care I would go into a huge downward spiral and not be productive for my clients or my health. I take care of myself by going for short walks and eating healthy (80% of the time).
Alison,
That’s good that you’re taking better care of yourself. I find that I am less productive and unable to do anything if I don’t stop to take care of myself too.
I have very much been lacking in the self care department 🙁
I really need to take a moment, and work on myself.
Yes you do. Self-care is very important.
Self care is essential part of our lives. We often ignore it but we have to make time for it. You have shared a detailed guide on it. Thank you.
You’re welcome! Is there a self-care dimensions that appeals to you the most?
It’s great that you’ve covered so many ways to practice self-care. Although you mentioned saving under financial self care, I’d even break that down to highlight saving up an emergency fund (to avoid debt when emergencies happen – and they will), and starting to save for retirement. It’s hard to think about retirement when you’re in your 20s & 30s. However, it you start saving for retirement when you’re younger, you won’t have to save as much due to the power of compound interest. Your older self will thank your younger self if you start saving a little for retirement right now.
I’ve actually never thought about saving for retirement or an emergency fund. I’m definitely going to look into those things. Thanks for the advice.
