More people are starting to accept the term self care and for good reasons. Prioritizing our wellbeing and taking proper care of ourselves is crucial to our overall health and allows us to become better people. Over the last month, I’ve spoken about the importance of taking care of your emotional wellbeing by practicing different types of emotional self care and love. So, this month, we’re going to focus on Spiritual Self Care, one of the most underrated self care dimensions.

I don’t know about you, but I love the Spring season. It’s one of my favorite times of the year. I love watching new flowers and trees bloom and seeing the transition from cold weather to warmer ones. Spring represents a new beginning, blossoming, which is what April is all about. Many people associate the month of April with finding new growth and being in tune with your inner selves. In other words, April is all about spirituality. Not only are the trees and flowers starting to bloom, but many people use this time to get in touch with themselves, divine gods, or spirits. 

Spiritual self-care is just as important as all the other dimensions of self-care. However, it is the most underrated form of self-care, which is why I will be focusing this month on ways you can practice spiritual self-care and how to implement it into your lives. 

But, first, you must understand what spiritual self-care is.

What is Spiritual Self Care?

Spiritual self-care is a set of practices that we do to promote our connection to our higher self. It consists of actions that we undertake to deepen the relationship between ourselves and our “higher self” or the part of us that wants to connect with something greater than ourselves. It’s about how many people establish peace and harmony by connecting the divine self to its creator. Spiritual self-care focuses on ways you can use spirituality to calm the mind and improve your overall health.

Many people underestimate the importance of caring for their spirit. It’s often associated with being religious, but religion is not the only form of spirituality. It’s finding the time for going outside and being with nature or cleansing your mind of invasive, intrusive, and negative thoughts. Spiritual self care helps people find inner peace and live in greater alignment with their core values and beliefs.

Meditate

Meditation has numerous health benefits and is a great way to restore your sense of peace and calmness. It’s a form of spiritual and emotional self care that helps that body and mind to relax. Some of the benefits of meditation include gaining stress management skills, reducing negative emotions, and improving mental clarity.

If you’re new to meditation, then I definitely recommend that you download the Headspace App, which is available for Apple and Android. They have meditation guides that are absolutely free and can help teach you the basics. It’s divided up by morning and night so you can practice different techniques for each part of the day.

Pray

Praying is a great way to practice spiritual self care, especially if you’re religious. It allows you to have a conversation with God and let out any pent-up emotions you may have. Praying has no time constraints and can be done at any time and anywhere. Get on your knees, go to the bathroom, or find a quiet space where you and your god can be alone for a decent amount of time.

Practice Gratitude

Whether it’s through a gratitude journal or reflection, practicing gratitude is the perfect way to focus on positive thinking and manifesting that energy around you. Finding time to be grateful is a good thing. It helps you to appreciate everything you have now and to stop dwelling on the past. It’s a good habit to get into because it teaches you to be more optimistic about the situations around you.

Why Is It Important?

We all understand the importance of taking care of our physical and mental selves. But, many underestimate the importance of taking care of our spiritual selves too. Spiritual self care focuses on ways to take care of the soul. For some people, this means going to church, and for others, it means taking a break from all worldly things. It is the key to living a balanced life. When you take the time to care for your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs, you’re giving yourself the chance to find peace and harmony in life.

Spirituality has many meanings, and there is no right or wrong way to go about it. Typically, your spirituality is influenced by your upbringing, the people you surround yourself with, and your values. There are many ways to be spiritual. Some people enjoy praying to God, and others like connecting to nature, animals, or other entities. It’s crucial to find a spiritual path that suits your needs and wants.

All you need to be spiritual is to recognize an area of your life that needs improvement and work towards it. Taking time for spiritual self-care is soul-fulfilling. It encourages you to soul search and offers clarity and comfort. You can be spiritual to take ten minutes or more out of the day to nurture and connect yourself with God or any higher entity.
