January 2022 Monthly Blog Review

Did you accomplish all your monthly goals? I think I did. Check out how Riyah Speaks performed in the latest monthly blog review.

Before diving into this monthly blog review, I need to share a few things. January was one of the most challenging months for me. I had a lot of things happen to me. Some of it was out of my control, and I feel like I could’ve tried harder. I caught COVID a week after the year started, and it was rough. I lost my sense of taste, had a high fever, and was coughing and wheezing everywhere. Luckily, my boyfriend didn’t catch COVID from me, and I recovered swiftly.

After recovering from Covid, I spent the rest of the month depressed and suffering from anxiety attacks. I know I talk about the importance of self-care in these moments, but it got the best of me. My mind was clouded, and I spent some weeks crying the entire time.

Right now, I am feeling better and am slowly working my way back into a consistent self-care and work routine. But, I wish depression and anxiety didn’t prevent achieving some of my monthly goals.

Despite the mental health and wellness issues this month, I surprisingly did well. So let’s take a lot at this month’s monthly blog review.

January Monthly Blog Review

While I was too busy being depressed, I did well this month. My blog didn’t dip in views or followers, which is excellent, considering this is around when it usually would drop. I also surpassed 100 email subscribers, which is fantastic!

Real Talk

Usually, I would use this section to talk about my most significant wins. But I wanted to talk about recognizing when someone is not okay, especially in the winter. People who suffer from mental health illnesses like depression or anxiety struggle the most during winter.

You may have heard of the term “seasonal depression.” Well, that’s precisely it. As the weather gets colder and denser, people with mental health illnesses can experience a drop in the brain chemicals needed for joy and happiness. But, unfortunately, it’s also when many people may share thoughts of suicide, hopelessness, and other negative emotions.

So, please. If you know a loved one who suffers from mental health illnesses, please check in with them. With the virus still raging and many people still quarantining, this year can be rough for people with mental health illnesses.

What To Expect In February

A lot is happening in February. First off, Valentine’s Day is that month which means I will be talking about self-love and self-esteem and sharing some Valentine’s Day gift guides for those shopping around. On top of that, it’s Black History Month.

Last year, I shared a small anecdote on what it was like to grow up biracial in the early 2000s. I briefly talked about the colorism I experienced with peers and educators alike as a light-skinned girl living in NYC. This year, I plan to do something different.

Instead of talking about myself, I want to highlight black creators, authors, writers, and small business owners making a difference in their communities. I have some roundups coming out which will showcase these different groups.

Did you achieve your monthly goals? Let me know in the comments.
