What is Self Care?
Did you know that there are 8 dimensions of self care? Neither did I until I learned about it. There are 08 dimensions of self-care that we use to care for ourselves–physical activity, mental wellbeing, spirituality, social self-care, intellectual self-care, financial self-care, environmental self-care, and emotional wellbeing. Self-care includes all the things you do to care for your overall health properly. It encompasses everything from eating healthy to getting a good night’s rest to calling your best friend.
Not practicing self-care can lead to all sorts of problems such as anxiety, depression, sickness, and death. There are many ways to practice self-care at home and when you’re outside. You have to find the practices that work best for you within each of the self care dimensions. So in this post, we will break down each of the 8 dimensions of self care and learn why each one is important.
The Self Care Dimensions
Physical Self Care
Regularly exercising and getting adequate amounts of it are important for many reasons. It improves health, fitness, and mood. In addition, scientists and health experts have linked exercise to other benefits such as losing weight and reducing the risk of metabolic illnesses and non-communicable illnesses, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer. In my opinion, this is one of the easiest dimensions of self care.

Ways to Practice Physical Self Care

Physical activity, also known as physical self-care, is any bodily movement that requires tons of energy. Physical self care is the first dimension in the 6 dimensions of self care and is one of the most important things to focus on. It’s a fancy way of saying exercise. We’ve all learned how important it is to move our joints and muscles frequently. Exercising is good for the health and can help lower your chances of catching incurable diseases or death.
Mental Health Self Care
There are many elements to mental well-being or mental self-care. It is about your thoughts and feelings and how you cope with everyday life’s ups and downs. Your mental well-being has to do with how we carry ourselves when negative emotions arise and how we overcome challenges. In other words, it deals with your mental health. Mental health self care is the most important self care dimension to focus on because it affects all of the other dimensions of self care.
Being mentally healthy and living well is important to every single one of us – whether we are living with a mental illness or not. Understanding mental health is more important now than ever. More people between the ages of 13-24 are diagnosed with mental illness, and worse, commit suicide. Mental self-care is slowly growing to be one of the most mainstream dimensions of self-care due to the growing number of suicides each year globally.

Spiritual Self Care
Spiritual self-care is a set of practices that we do to promote our connection to our higher self. It consists of actions that we undertake to deepen the connection between ourselves and our “higher self” or the part of us that wants to connect with something greater than ourselves. It’s how many people establish peace and harmony by connecting the divine self to its creator.
We all understand the importance of taking care of our physical and mental selves. But, many underestimate the importance of taking care of our spiritual selves too. Spiritual self-care focuses on ways to take care of the soul. For some people, this means going to church, and for others, it means taking a break from all materialistic things.

It’s about cultivating a healthy mindset by expanding your inner knowledge. Under this dimension, you are responsible for your personal growth by educating and engaging in new things.
Your brain needs as much self-care as your heart and mind. Intellectual self-care encourages us to engage in creative and mentally stimulating activities, and it requires lifelong learning and curiosity. It can be developed through academics, cultural involvement, community involvement, and personal hobbies that expand your knowledge and skills while allowing you to share your knowledge and skills with others.

Like the mental self-care dimension, emotional wellbeing focuses on how you cope with your thoughts and emotions. The difference between the two dimensions is that this one focuses on how you emotionally cope with negative thoughts, feelings, or situations.
This self care dimension is easily confused with mental health. Like mental self-care, the phrase emotional well-being, or emotional self-care, can easily be used in conversation, even if no one is sure about the term’s meaning. Mental well-being focuses on how we mentally cope with our feelings. In comparison, emotional well-being is about how our feelings affect our perceptions and how we emotionally react to situations.

Learning how to manage your finances is important in this new age, especially for young people between 18 to 30 years old. To live, you need to have money. It’s important for managing all of your other self care dimensions. You cannot care for one without cash.

Enviornmental Self Care
Environmental self-care focuses on how we harmonize with nature and the earth surrounding us. This is the last dimension in the 8 dimensions of self care.
The environment shapes our identities, determines productivity levels, and be a major indicator of our overall mental health. Environmental self-care is the practice of taking care of your environment. This type of self-care is significant for those who spend a lot of time at home during COVID.

Why is Self-Care Important?
It’s important to learn what each of these self care dimensions is because it’s important to your overall wellbeing. Self-care helps you maintain a healthy relationship with your physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental selves. Without understanding the dimensions of self-care, you risk suffering from chronic diseases and even death. Self care helps you to produce and transmit positive feelings to yourself and others. It’s how you’re able to understand and process what your body wants and needs.
